When Should Kids Start International Tournaments?
The Honest Answer: Earlier Isn’t Always Better
A lot believe their kids must start at 10 or 11 years old.
The reality is: some players benefit from international exposure at age 10-11, while a lot of the others are better off waiting until 12-13 years old. More importantly, late starters can still become elite juniors.
The purpose of the first international tournament should not be rankings.
It should be:
- Learning new playing styles
- Experiencing different tennis cultures
- Becoming more independent
- Understanding the level required internationally
Typical Starting Ages
| Age | Recommendation |
| U10 | Usually too early unless exceptionally motivated |
| U11-U12 | Good introduction through friendly international events |
| U12-U13 | Ideal age for most players |
| U14+ | Tennis Europe becomes increasingly important |
